To be called a student of a college/university is not just a matter of going through the various registration processes, for it is just a fraction of the whole procedure.
You will hear continuing students say “the
school is yet, to recognize you”.
Yes, the school doesn’t know you as its student, until that recognition
is officially acknowledged, in most cases, by the vice chancellor of the school
on the day of your
matriculation.
Matriculation is that
point in time where you have applied and the college/university officially
accepts you to be part of its family. This is because you have been confirmed
eligible after having gone through all the requisite academic processes, such
as; course registration , medical examination, departmental registration, orientation
among others.
It is important for you
as a newly admitted student to undergo matriculation, a requirement which is the final stage of being
pronounced and recognized as a student of that college/university,
where for the first time, students have the opportunity to see their Vice
Chancellor.
➢ Only matriculated
students can attend lectures and enjoy the many advantages that enhance their
educational experience and campus life.
➢ More so, only matriculated students’ degree or certificate
program requirements won’t change. Once you are admitted, you have a contract
with the institution for the program requirements listed in the institution’s
catalogue for that academic year. Change in program requirements
that are made subsequently will not apply to you, provided that you maintained
your matriculation status.
➢ Importantly, only matriculated students are eligible to
graduate from a degree or certificate program. Once you are admitted
and upon signing a matriculation document or partaking in a matriculation
examination, you have a contract with the institution to issue to you the
required certificate after successful graduation.
➢ Furthermore, only matriculated students may apply for a
financial aid programmes such as the student loan and scholarship programs
using the name of the institution. This is because most financial aid programs
requires a student to be matriculated (officially recognized as a student).
➢ Eventually, only matriculated students
are required to register their courses at the beginning of every semester, upon
which they will be examined. You will be able to access your personal profile
to monitor your academic progress and you will also be eligible/qualified to
access or participate in any academic model or programme organised by the
institution.
