22nd October, 2016 was the day slated for University Of Professional Studies, Accra-UPSA’S Matriculation. An event which saw about 3,216 newly admitted students for the 2016/2017 academic year, officially welcomed into the University.
Prof.
Joshua Alabi, the Vice Chancellor (V.C) of the University,
congratulated the matriculants for the right choice made in choosing
UPSA. According, to him, the gesture portrayed by their massive turnout
alone, shows their readiness and determination to take a new life in
UPSA. He admonished them to develop a very serious approach towards
their studies, develop creative abilities, aim high and pursue
diligently their loftiest aspirations so that their education becomes
all that it ought to be.
Speaking on
the essence of matriculation, The V.C noted that more often than not,
there is a tendency by many to see the oath swearing segment of the
ceremony as a routine activity, hurriedly done, merely to fulfill an
obligation. This otherwise, he stated, should not be the case.
"This segment
should rather be seen as an occasion to make a solemn declaration and
commitment of oneself to abide by the requirements of the oath," V.C
said.
UPSA has admitted 3216(46.25%) out of a total application of about 6954.
Of this number, there are 592 diploma students, 1949 undergraduate students
596 graduate students, and 79 Professional students, explained Prof. Alabi, who has
Been hailed by
many for his excellent leadership in transforming UPSA from a mere
professional tutorial institution into a leading university.
He explained
that the two newly introduced programmes, LLB. Law and BSc. Actuarial
Science, would not only enrich the array of courses for prospective
applicants of the school but would go a long way to improving the Human
Resource of the country. He also disclosed that other planned programmes
like PhD. Marketing and PhD. Leadership are at different stages of the
accreditation process and will be rolled out once the required processes
are completed.
Speaking on
projects, He disclosed that the council has given the approval of the
acquisition of 100 plots of land at Oyibi, for the construction of staff
bungalows. This initiative according to him is within the context of
Management’s desire to motivate staff of the university who has worked
very hard over the past years to improve conditions at the university
and also to continue to give forth their best.
He also
mentioned that work is currently ongoing on the construction of an
auditorium with a sitting capacity of about 3500. According to him, work
is steadily ongoing on the construction of a student centre. This
edifice, when completed will among other things, house, shops, food
courts, meeting rooms etc, which will facilitate other campus activities
outside the lecture halls.
The V.C
expressed his gratitude towards the University Community for the
wonderful support he has enjoyed. He was particularly happy about the
absence of any incidence of industrial action and student demonstration.
He attributed this to the wonderful relationship that exists within the
University Community.
Prof. Joshua
Alabi on his last matriculation as a Vice Chancellor, appealed to the
University community to extend the support given him to the one after
him, Prof. Abednego Feehi Okoe, who is also a very humble man.
