Peace and order could not be maintained when the student leaders and representatives gathered for the first SRC General Assembly Meeting for the second semester of the 2016/2017 academic year.
The situation got worse when some members of the house who disagreed with each other engaged in a heated verbal exchange. The House was completely thrown into a state of Chaos.
This unfortunate scene occurred during the State of the SRC Address by the SRC President of the University of Ghana, Esinam Afi Seade. The incident dragged the sitting and pushed the Speaker of the house to call for a brief recess.
Some members of the General Assembly had requested that the SRC President issue a disclaimer to an earlier release that had wrongly indicated that the University of Ghana through the SRC President had withdrawn its membership from the University Students Association of Ghana (USAG).
Esinam Afi Seade revealed that she never consented nor signed any such release to have the SRC withdraw its membership from USAG. She added that she was even absent at the recently held USAG Congress.
The President was adamant in agreeing to a resolution to have the SRC issue a disclaimer to the earlier release. It appeared that such an action was deemed not important by the President.
The responses from the SRC President didn’t go down well with some members in the gallery who openly disrespected her by hurling insults at her.
There was murmuring and disorder as the disagreement continued among members of the house. The Speaker of the House, Hon. John Sarpong intervened but it seemed that his intervention and stern warning for members to comport themselves and respect the SRC President did not go down well with one member in the gallery.
The said member in the gallery stood up to speak without the permission of the Speaker. He also refused to sit when instructed by the Speaker of the house.
Leadership of the SRC General Assembly could not maintain order in the house thereby forcing the Speaker to call for a recess.
The General Assembly Meeting will continue on Saturday, 11th of February,2017.
