In the quest to provide conducive learning
environment to its members, the leadership of Graduate Students Association of
Ghana (GRASAG) – Legon, has refurbished their reading room at Akuafo Annex D.
The facility, refurbished at a total cost of GH₵15, 709.00 was
opened to students for use on Monday, 13th March, 2017.
The reading room has been furnished with new tables and chairs,
two air conditioners, carpet and curtains.
In a welcome address at a brief ceremony to officially open
the facility, the President of GRASAG-Legon, Mr Nana Kwame Asafo-Adjei
reiterated his commitment to ensuring that members of the association learn and
do research in a comfortable and serene environment.

He said, his
administration is focused on ensuring that graduate members fulfil their core
mandates as students- thus to learn and do research.
To this end, he
indicated that leadership of the association organised series of workshops,
seminars and training sessions, all in the quest to equip students with
requisite knowledge and skills in order to undertake their graduate studies
successfully.
"My
administration has taken a keen interest in ensuring that our core duty here as
students to learn and to research is enhanced. We have worked with Balme
library particularly Research Commons to organise several series of research
training, we've also worked with the UGCS to ensure or make sure that our
students are up-to-speed with technology in terms of researching," he
said.
He noted that, similar
projects will be extended to other graduate campuses of the University of Ghana
such as Korle-Bu and Atomic campuses.
The Dean of Graduate
Studies, Professor Tano Debrah commended the leadership of GRASAG for taking
the initiative to renovate their reading room, saying this is an indication
that students’ monies are put to good use.
He added that this facility will add to existing resources which
students can use to produce quality thesis and research works to meet the high
standard the University expects of them. As part of his plans to ensure
resource centres are closer to students, the Dean indicated that, he has
proposed that an electronic library be built in-between Jubilee hall and Hilla
Limann hall to serve students especially graduate students staying in those
halls and surrounding ones to undertake effective study and research work.
On his part, the Dean of Students, Prof
F.K.E Nunoo called on graduate students to participate in the activities of the
Students' Representative Council (SRC).
He said the University has only one
student's council and all graduate students are part of it.
"University of Ghana has got only one SRC and as graduate
students, you are members of the SRC as well," he told graduate students
at the ceremony and added that although the current constitution of the SRC
prohibits graduate students from contesting for the position of the president
of the council, he wants to see graduate students involve at different levels
in the upcoming SRC elections.
Speaking on behalf of the Hall Management,
the Senior Tutor of the Akuafo Hall, Dr. Vincent Von Vordzogbe revealed that
the whole Annex D will be given to graduate students starting from next
academic year.
He called on students to maintain the facility.

academic year, Mr Fred Amankwa-Sarfo, who chaired the ceremony thanked the
president of the association and his team for this great initiative and said
the facility will augment the efforts of the University authorities to ensure
student have a more comfortable environment to undertake their academic work.
