CAMPUS UPDATE TV

Celebrated Ghanaian writer, Ayesha Harruna Attah has implored young writers to do what it takes to get their books to their audience.
Recounting her experience, ‘The Hundred Wells of Salaga’ author said the road to recognition as a writer could be long and torturous, requiring sacrifice.

She disclosed this at the Speakers’ Durbar during the 2018 Accra International Book Festival held last Saturday at the Ghana Wildlife Society’s Swiss Hall.
Other writers who participated in the Durbar included Boakyewaa Glover, Manasseh Azure Awuni, Empi Baryeh, Ruby Goka, and Nana Awere Damoah.
“Your book is your baby [and] you know how best to push it,” she said, adding, “if you are a self-publisher you go everywhere with your books.”

The author of three highly rated books recounted her 10-year personal journey to recognition as a writer.
Ayesha Haruna Atta

She disclosed her first book ‘Harmattan Rain’ published in 2009 by a small company in Senegal sold 50 to 100 copies after it was launched in the U.S.

But the hunger to get her books out there compelled her to combine forces with another Ghanaian writer, Nana Ekua Brew-Hammond to embark on an expedition to introduce her books to strangers.
“I put the books in a suitcase and went and knocked on anybody’s door,” she said. But that did not drive sales, she narrated.

Her second book, ‘Saturday’s Shadows’ published in the Netherlands in 2015 did not do well but that did not dampen her spirit.

But after 10 years of struggle and sacrifice, her books are now courting the attention of readers and literary experts across the world.

“For the first time in my life I just get to sit down and somebody else is doing the running around,” she said of her partnership with Nigeria’s Cassava Republic, publishers of her latest novel ‘The Hundred Wells of Salaga.’

“But it doesn’t stop me from reaching out to bloggers and readers,” she said.

On his part, investigative journalist and author, Manasseh Azure Awuni cautioned aspiring writers to resist the temptation of making money their sole motivation for writing.

“Start writing [but] the money shouldn’t be the motivation. If you are writing because of money you will get frustrated,” he said.
Mr Azure Awuni advised young writers to “Seek ye first the kingdom of writing and the money will follow you.”

he Technical University Teachers Association of Ghana (TUTAG) has declared a sit-down strike with immediate effect following the refusal of Government to offer them the same conditions of service as lecturers in public universities.
A statement copied to the Ghana News Agency and signed by Dr Solomon A. Keelson, National President of TUTAG, explained that the Association had been denied the required conditions of service for Public Universities since it was upgraded from Polytechnics to Technical Universities.
“We submitted a letter dated August 29, 2018, notifying the National Labour Commission (NLC) of our intention to embark upon industrial action to press home our demand for immediate migration.

“We subsequently received a letter from the NLC dated August 30, 2018, summoning us to a hearing scheduled for Wednesday, September 12, 2018. We attended upon this summons but the NLC failed or neglected to sit and hear our case, and left us stranded at the offices of the Commission”.
The statement explained that it is in view of this, that the association has declared an indefinite sit-down strike, having followed the requirements of the labours laws of Ghana.
It explained that there exist conditions of service that apply in public universities in the country and as it is the standard practice, staff of newly established public universities were migrated onto such existing conditions of service.
“Such migration is legal, logical, fair, right and just since the prevailing conditions of service apply to the category of employees referred to in the agreed terms, for which we stand qualified,” the statement said.
The statement noted that even when there is variance in relation to the conditions of service as provided for, and enjoyed by Technical Universities, they had continued to fulfil their duties, responsibilities and obligations to the Universities.
It said: “The failure of our employer so far, to migrate us onto the requisite pay structure that pertains to public universities is hurtful in several respects and tensions on the various campuses have reached a crescendo”.
It noted that the Association rejects the preconditions set by the Ministry of Education through the National Council for Tertiary Education after a letter of request was sent to the sector to expedite action along with the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission to remedy the situation.
The statement explained that the preconditions which are the enactment of statuses, adoption of approved scheme of service and conduct of a comprehensive staff audit deemed as necessary by the Ministry before migrating TUTAG onto the conditions of service are just excuses to delay the process.
“The continuous delay in migrating staff of Technical Universities onto the conditions of service that apply in public universities is unfair and unjust because the establishment of Technical Universities also means upgrade in corresponding conditions of service commensurate with the new status.
“However, since 2016 we have been public universities by stature and responsibilities but continue to receive Polytechnics conditions of service, unlike the case of the University of Professional Studies and University of Winneba, where various staff were immediately migrated onto the conditions of service of public universities”.
The statement revealed that due to the delay in migrating the Technical Universities onto the Public Universities’ single spine salary structure, there are discrepancies in reward to staff.
It stressed that, as a result, most of the lecturers with PhD and other Professionals, who are disgruntled with the situation continue to leave for the other public universities.
The statement noted that, the implications is that any further delay to migrate the staff could lead to huge loss of a lot of qualified lecturers to the other established Public Universities.
It added that those who choose to stay would also suffer financial loses and it will go a long way to affect negatively, the President’s vision of industrialising Ghana through Technical Vocational Education and Training.

Charcoal is one of the most disregarded products at home. We only see the need for it when it is time to set fire for Banku.
However, if you really need first aid, charcoal is something you need to have on you all the time. You might not know this but it is one of the most medicinal products you can have at home due to its poison extraction ability.
In case you never gave it much attention, this is the time to do so. Here are *13* benefits of charcoal you never thought about.
1. *#Preventing_Odour*.
Does your shoe smell bad? Just get some charcoal & put it in them. Do you have any bad smell in your room? Drop some charcoal where you suspect the smell could be coming from. Does your fridge or freezer smell? Put a piece of charcoal in it. Do you have strong body odour? Just make a powder out of charcoal & use.
Charcoal is very good at getting rid of bad smell. Ever wondered why your parents always scooped out the ash from the coal pot to pour in the hen coop or toilet before sweeping? That was to get rid of the odour.
2. *#Keeping_Food_Fresh*.
If you want your vegetables to be fresh all the time, just make a solution out of charcoal & leave your vegetables in them. Thank us later.
3. *#Removing_Toxins_From_Food*.
These days, people complain about the use of fertilizers on plants & vegetables, making them unwholesome & poisonous. If you have charcoal, you don’t need to worry about this. All you need to do is leave the vegetables in a charcoal solution overnight & it’ll take care of the toxins. If you suspect any food contains too many chemicals, just drop them in a charcoal solution for some hours & you’re good to go.
4. *#For_Teeth_Whitening*.
If you want to whiten your teeth, pay no attention to all these adverts on whitening chemicals & technology. Just get yourself some charcoal & grab hold of a plantain stalk. Make a powder out of the charcoal, mash the tip of the plantain stalk, dip it into the charcoal powder & brush your teeth with it for a week.
5. *#Restoring_Soup_That_Went_Bad*.
Did your groundnut soup or palm nut soup go bad? No need to worry about pouring it all away. Just put it back on fire & drop a piece of charcoal in it. This will extract all the bad taste & smell & restore the soup to its fresh state.
6. *#Detoxifying*.
Do you have a hangover out of a drink out with friends the previous night? Just have some charcoal with you & chew on it. To make it more effective, make a nice solution out of it & drink. You’re good to go.
7. *#Neutralizing_Alcohol*.
If you mistakenly did some wild mixing & feel it can knock you out, just add some charcoal to the mixture & your problem is solved. Or if you took in too much alcohol, just drink some charcoal solution & you’re good to go.
8. *#Healing_Wounds*.
Do you have a situation where someone’s wound has become so infected to the state doctors are saying they have to cut the affected area? Don’t stress over it, get a large amount of charcoal powder & pour it on the wound. This will extract all the poison from the wound & also help it heal faster. If you have a cut & you want to treat it fast, just get some powdered charcoal & pour on it.
9. *#Water_Filtration*.
Do you feel your water is contaminated? You don’t need all these products on the market. Charcoal can do better, just drop some amount of it in it. Don’t worry about the colour, it is safe, you can even chew on charcoal. It is far safer than eating chicken from KFC.
10. *#Skin_Cleansing*.
Do you have pimples, acne or any skin disease you really want to get rid of or do you want a very smooth face or skin? All you need is charcoal. Make a thick solution out of it & smear it on your body & leave it on for some hours before taking your bath. It will leave your skin smooth & fresh.
11. *#Stain_Removal*.
Do you have some stubborn stain in your kitchen, washroom or on your tiles? You actually need charcoal to get rid of it. I know you’re imagining how this black stainy product can actually remove stains right? Just try it, it works like magic.
12. *#Getting_rid_of_a_Bloated_Stomach*.
If you ate or drank something & feel bloated, charcoal is the best solution to get rid of the bloating.
13. *#Gets_Rid_of_bad_Cholesterol*.
Making a solution out of it & drinking helps eliminate all the bad cholesterol you have stored in you.
14. *#Ulcer_Treatment*.
Charcoal can treat all ulcers. Just make it a habit to always chew some.

The executive body of the Students' Representative Council has indeed been saddened by the event of last night. Our hearts painfully aches as we reflect on yesterday's tragedy (Gas explosion) and we stand with all those who were directly or indirectly affected by this mayhem.

The aforementioned event has rekindled and confirmed fears already harboured by the students populace regarding the possible threat of the Sel filling station which is just a few meters from the premises of our beloved institution.
We would like to state that we share in these sentiments but will like to call on all students to support the SRC with full force in this time of turmoil so that we can effectively and permanently deal with the issue at hand.
We would like to categorically state that we will not rest until we permanently resolve this issues and we will call on all student leaders and indeed all students on campus to also come on board and let us do this right.
We are therefore sending this strong signal to the management of the Sel filling station, EPA, NPA and the La Nkwantanan Municipal Assembly that if measures are not taken to close down the filling station, we the students of UPSA will be forced to
protect our lives by embarking on an intensive demonstration that will compel the Sel filling station to be closed with immediate effect.
We therefore employ all students to vehemently stand behind the SRC as we follow due processes for our grievance to be addressed properly.
All students should therefore prepare to hear and support the SRC executive council with the decision we will be making tonight on this matter.
This we believe will only be possible together.
Long live the SRC
Long live UPSA
And May The Good Lord Bless Us All.

The University of Professional Studies, Accra, bas won the maiden edition of the National Accounting Quiz (NAQ) which was organized by Young Professional Accountants Network (YPAN), a non-governmental consult which seeks to motivate young people to become chartered accountants. YPAN in collaboration with Databank, ACCA, CIMA and UPSA brought the maiden edition to bear.

The maiden edition which was supposed to last for five days with 16 schools participating only lasted for two days with just five schools participating.
On October 3, 2017, the opening ceremony took place at the Lecture Block Complex (LBC) auditorium on UPSA campus. Immediately after the program was launched, the first group (Group A) which comprised of Accra Technical University (ATU), Ghana Technology University College (GTUC) and Central University College (CUC) started the opening of the maiden edition of the quiz. Immediately after Group A had finished their contest, there was a preparation of the next group—Group B which comprised of University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA), the hosting school and All Nations University.
At the end of the whole context for the first day, the total results of the five groups were published and UPSA pulled 40 points, All Nations-29, GTUC-23, CUC-20 and ATU-19 which legitimately eliminated ATU from the context.
The semi-final took place on October 4, 2017 and at the end of the whole context in the semi-final, UPSA and Central University qualified for the Finals.
The grand finale began after 30 minutes and after an interesting round, the whole contest came to an end and the host school-UPSA-won the competition and carried the trophy with some scholarship packages for the contestants.

*Campus Update*
We are now counting hours and all of you form SHS leavers will be making your debuts at campus. Trust me I know how it feels when you’re new in town and you actually want to act like you’ve been around for quite long. Am not saying that this is bad but on a sad note,  you my dear freshers decide to force yourselves and leave us with no better choice than looking at you in dismay with lines like “Huh! look, the cat is finally out of the bag!”
Sit back,  I bring you four steps that will help you stand out of the pack;
1. Work on your expression
Many freshmen decide to put on that tough look like they’ve just fought with an alligator, whilst the babes come in rolling eyes up and down as if its a pussy cat being teased with a saucer of meat as phrases like “OMG!!” not skipping their lips, this is so high school. Well, I know you’ve been caged in fences for the last few years but brother, don’t hit campus swinging your palm punches with imaginary hip-hop verses flowing through your head. Its not cool.
2. Drop that envelope now
I mean, why move around with brown envelopes just because you have your documents ready for registration? Is a small, easy bag that expensive? Put your envelope in a nice clean bag and only put it out when required.
3. Avoid moving in ‘gangs’
Look, am not saying you should isolate your self from your peers, but hey we all know your whole SHS 3 class made it to campus, but this doesn’t mean you must bounce through campus in swarms for goodness its so first-year! Get one or two peers and move along with those.
Campus is a good place to be, but even better if you know the rules of the game, don’t loose it while trying to look so cool.
Isn’t it disheartening to have spent so much money, time and energy on a University Education, only for you to join the league of unemployed graduates after completion?

The menace of graduate unemployment has being with us from time immemorial.
Unfortunately, we are yet to see results as successive government’s effort to control the perturbing challenge proves fruitless.

It is in this light that the Local NUGS outfit of the University of Education, Winneba couldn’t have considered a better theme for this year’s Excellence Awards Night than “The Role of Academia in Helping to curb Unemployment in Ghana”

In throwing more light on the theme, Enoch Ansah, the local NUGS president bemoaned the prevailing unemployment rate in the country with its unfavourable effects on the development of the country.

In addition, he was poignant at government’s inability to attract into second cycle institutions graduates of education universities such as University of Education, Winneba and University of Cape Coast.

Meanwhile, Hon. Kennedy Agyapong, a business mogul and one of Ghana’s astute politician will be delivering the keynote address on the theme for the year.

Dr. Smith Graham, CEO of Fair Wages and Salary Commission Ghana, will be chairing the occasion with the strong backing of personalities such as Hon. Derrick Ohene Bokoe ( MP Upper West), Michael Paa-Quecy Adu (Fmr. NUGS President) and Mr. Julian Mawusi Kobina, the current NUGS president.

Watch this space as we countdown to the main event come 7th of April, 2017.

The Member of Parliament for Nsawam Aduagyire, Annor Dompreh has urged the presidency to wean itself off the Scholarship Secretariat and allow an independently constituted body to run the agency. This, he said, will ensure that political influences are reduced to the barest minimum.

It will also enable professionals with expertise in scholarship administration to manage and strengthen the secretariat to deliver on its mission.
Making a statement on the floor of Parliament on reforming and decentralizing the operations of the scholarship secretariat, the MP indicated that the operations of the secretariat do not appear to be regulated by any statute.
“Everything appears to be at the discretion of the National Coordinator,” Mr. Annor Dompreh stated.
He expressed concern about the suffering that rural folks go through to access the Scholarship Secretariat. He noted that access to the facility has been restricted by centralization, when the the secretariat is to provide financial support to brilliant but needy students across the country.
According to him, manifestly, many financially handicapped parents reside in remote areas with their brilliant but needy children.
“Many of such people have never been to the nation’s capital and as such do not know of the existence of the scholarship facility or even when they do, they are unfamiliar with the process of procuring the application forms,” he noted.
Emphasizing on decentralization, the MP also said there are many poor people who do not have the money to even travel to Accra for the forms, this he said is a worrying situation. He added that the location of the secretariat alone defeats the purpose of making it accessible to the very people who are supposed to benefit from it.
He recommended that a secretariat is established in all the ten regions and possibly in all districts to increase accessibility as well as broaden the scope of the scheme.
The former Deputy Minister of Education in charge of Tertiary Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa supported the statement made by Annor Dompreh, asking that the forms are made available on the internet for applicants.
He revealed that in the erstwhile administration, he noticed that GETFUND was awarding more scholarships than the Scholarship Secretariat itself.

The office of the Dean of Student Affairs at the University of Ghana, has put a stop to the upcoming hall week celebration of Commonwealth Hall. The Dean, Professor Francis Nunoo, who announced this on Campus Exclusive on Radio Univers Monday morning, said the decision was to protect lives and properties of the university.

He said, his office suspects a possible retaliatory actions by students from other universities on Legon campus if Commonwealth hall organizes their hall week.
“We suspect that, there could be some retaliatory actions when they also organize their hall week. So to protect property and lives on campus we put a hold on their forthcoming hall week for now”, he said.
Students of Commonwealth hall were reportedly involved in a bloody clash which happened on UCC campus during the hall week celebrations of Atlantic hall. At least three (3) students were reported to have sustained serious injuries.
Also, the decision to ban week celebration of Commonwealth hall was to facilitate the police investigation into the roots of the violence.
He added that this decision was arrived at, in consultation with the hall management and Council which includes the student leadership.
“This decision has been taken in consultation with the hall management and council which includes the student leadership as well," he added.
Professor Nunoo further noted that this move is one of the numerous measures his outfit is prepared to take to defend the interest of the institution.
"This is just one of the many sanctions and measures that we’re taken and a host others to try and protect life and property on the University of Ghana campus”, he stated.
The Dean of Students was however skeptical as to duration of this ban, explaining the reinstatement of the week celebration depends on the outcome of the police investigation.
The euphoria and all the ecstasy came to a standstill on the 5th day of April, 2017 as UCC SRC elections was set ablaze. Realistically, the tension, heat and the charged atmosphere in this year's UCC SRC elections cannot be compared to last year, however, everything came to a successful end. We're hoping that the newly elected personalities will work their hearts out and put the interest of the electorates (students) at the zenith level instead of their own. With this, We believe UCC will be the beacon of hope among its contenders.
Students of University of Education, Winneba last night went on rampage after Medikal’s ten minutes poor performance.

The students who patiently waited for Medikal to leave the stage began throwing gravels at the current SRC executives and organizers. In the process properties worth millions of cedis were destroyed.

According to an eyewitness “They vandalized everything on the stage including the lights… The stage itself… DJ equipments.. Both campus djs and outside djs
They burnt speakers and cut some into pieces… Dragged most of the equipments into the bush”

Street from the venue were blocked with trees, chairs  and pavement blocks making  it difficult for police to get access to the venue to maintain law and order.
The police arrived late after equipment were already burnt but managed to bring the situation under control.

Students of University of Education, Winneba are known for their peaceful nature, however they couldn’t contained the rage with which they have kept for so long and exploded like a volcano.

Report has it that the incident was as a result of the intercom’s decision to bill only one artist (Medikal) for the night. The students therefore see no reason why that should be the case considering the huge some of money paid as dues.

Meanwhile, before the incident, students are already disappointed at the administration of the  2016/17 executives of SRC for having nothing to show ever since they assumed office.

The branded SRC pen drives promised to students by the 2016/17 administration could be described as a hoax since some are virtually empty and others having 2gig instead of 8 gig.

The above and many more factors contributed to the unfortunate incident on the night.
Prior to the rampage, a student openly insulted  the  mother of the SRC president, Mr Jarvis Koffie whilst he was on Campus file show on Radio WindyBay.

Management is yet to comment on the incidents.

The chairman of  the SRC  electoral commission, Hon. Gyapong Safo Wilbert released vetting results of aspirant who picked nomination forms to contest this year’s elections on 29th March, 2017.

A nine member committee which was constituted by the Local Assembly and chaired by the electoral commissioner started its work on Wednesday 22nd of March and ended Monday 27th of March at exactly 3am.

In an interview, spokesperson for the vetting committee, Mr. Robert Atsu Okor said that the vetting process was generally successful. He was however quick to add that, some  aspirants having read the provisions as regards this year’s elections still appeared before the vetting committee knowing very well they do not meet the requirement, especially regarding their CGPAs.

In addition, some of the aspirants seem unprepared as they failed to answer questions pertaining to their office couple with other minor issues such as mistakes and omissions on aspirants CV among others.

Per the results, this year’s SRC Presidency is going to be keenly contested between candidates with same surname as in Patrick Agyei, a student of Business Administration who pulled 92.4% and Joseph Agyei, a student of  English Language 79.0%  respectively.

Meanwhile, 10th April, 2017 has being set for the main showdown. We entreat all and sundry  to be glued to this space for all the build up to the this year’s general elections.
